About IRDI
General information about IRDI, its purpose, and the standards it promotes.
What is IRDI?
The International Responsible Detectorist Institute is an organization dedicated to advancing responsible recreational metal detecting through education, ethical standards, certification, and stewardship.
Why was IRDI created?
IRDI was created to provide detectorists with a clear educational and certification standard. Its purpose is to strengthen public confidence in the hobby, support responsible conduct, build landowner trust, and encourage the preservation of historic resources.
Is IRDI only for experienced detectorists?
No. IRDI is intended to support both new and experienced detectorists. New detectorists can develop responsible habits from the beginning, while experienced detectorists can demonstrate their knowledge and commitment to recognized standards.
Is IRDI affiliated with a metal detector manufacturer?
IRDI certification is intended to focus on detectorist knowledge, ethics, and responsible practices rather than promoting a particular detector manufacturer or equipment brand.
Certification
Information about eligibility, certification requirements, and the purpose of earning an IRDI credential.
What does IRDI certification demonstrate?
IRDI certification demonstrates that a detectorist has completed the required educational and assessment process and has shown an understanding of responsible detecting practices, ethics, landowner relations, historic preservation, and professional conduct.
Who can apply for IRDI certification?
Certification is intended for individuals who want to demonstrate their knowledge of responsible recreational metal detecting. Review the Earn Certification page for the current eligibility requirements and application process.
Do I need years of metal detecting experience to become certified?
Certification is based on meeting IRDI’s requirements and demonstrating the required knowledge. Previous experience may be helpful, but applicants should review the current program requirements before beginning.
How do I begin the certification process?
Begin by visiting the Earn Certification page. That page explains the current certification steps, educational requirements, assessment process, and any information applicants must submit.
How much does certification cost?
Current certification fees, when applicable, are listed on the Earn Certification page. Applicants should review that page for the most recent program and payment information.
Can detectorists outside the United States become certified?
IRDI is developing standards for the international recreational metal detecting community. Applicants should review the current eligibility information on the Earn Certification page or contact IRDI with questions about participation from their country.
Assessments and Results
Common questions about certification assessments, results, and completing the program.
What subjects are covered during certification?
Certification may address responsible recovery methods, ethics, permission and landowner relations, legal awareness, historic preservation, site care, documentation, and professional conduct. Review the Earn Certification page for the current program requirements.
How will I receive my results?
Applicants will receive results and any required next steps through the contact method identified during the certification process. Be sure that the information submitted with your application is accurate.
What happens if I do not pass an assessment?
Retake opportunities and any additional requirements will be explained as part of the certification process. Applicants should follow the instructions provided with their results or contact IRDI for assistance.
How long does the certification process take?
Completion time may depend on the program, applicant preparation, assessment requirements, and administrative processing. The Earn Certification page should be reviewed for the most current timeline information.
Credentials and Verification
Information for certificate holders, landowners, organizations, and members of the public who need to confirm a credential.
How can an IRDI certification be verified?
Use the Verify Certification page and enter the requested credential information. The verification process helps landowners, clubs, organizations, and members of the public confirm whether an IRDI credential is valid.
Who may use the certification verification system?
The verification system may be used by certificate holders, landowners, clubs, event organizers, organizations, or other individuals who need to confirm an IRDI credential.
What should I do if a credential cannot be found?
First, confirm that the credential number and other identifying information were entered correctly. If the record still cannot be located, contact IRDI for assistance.
Does IRDI certification expire?
Certification validity, renewal requirements, and continuing education requirements depend on the current IRDI certification policy. Certificate holders should refer to their credential documentation or contact IRDI for current information.
Ethics and Legal Responsibilities
Important information about permissions, laws, site protection, and responsible conduct.
Does IRDI certification give me permission to detect on private property?
No. Certification does not replace landowner permission. Detectorists must obtain the appropriate permission before entering or detecting on private property.
Does certification allow me to detect anywhere?
No. Certification does not override local, state, provincial, national, tribal, or international laws and regulations. Every detectorist is responsible for determining where detecting is permitted and obtaining all required permissions.
Does IRDI provide legal advice about metal detecting?
No. IRDI educational information is not a substitute for legal advice. Laws and regulations vary by location and may change. Detectorists should consult the appropriate government agency, property owner, or qualified legal professional when necessary.
What does responsible recovery mean?
Responsible recovery includes using careful digging methods, minimizing ground disturbance, filling holes properly, removing trash, respecting sensitive sites, documenting significant discoveries when appropriate, and leaving the property in excellent condition.
What should I do if I discover something historically or archaeologically significant?
Stop and avoid disturbing the surrounding area. Document the location when lawful and appropriate, protect the site, and contact the relevant landowner, government authority, museum, archaeologist, or heritage organization for guidance.
